SIMPLICITY/COMPLEXITY
Challenged to analyze the relevance of Bauhaus ideals and methods in 21st century design education, this essay examines the nine central themes of the Bauhaus philosophy of design: 1) the importance of design fundamentals; 2) form follows function; 3) the primacy of play; 4) a focus on the future; 5) simplicity vs. complexity; 6) interdisciplinarity; 7) social responsibility; 8) the personalization of teaching and learning; and 9) connections between design, enterprise, and technology. These themes are contrasted with contemporary considerations such as systems thinking, sustainability, and globalization to suggest a new way to approach design's big ideas.
